The Bulwark, Albion & Centaur Association held its 30th AGM & Reunion at Sand Bay Holiday Village near Weston-super-Mare. Around 150 members & guests were booked for the three night extravaganza & judging by the feedback, everyone enjoyed a sun-baked weekend. At the AGM, two members were presented with certificates by the President, Vice-Admiral Sir Patrick Symons KBE. Henley Howard & Roy Walton joined the association on its inauguration back in1979. Lt Ian Lightfoot represented the current HMS Albion. The evening raffle raised £300 for “Help the Heroes”.
Guest speaker at the Gala Dinner was Commodore Jerry Stanford, the first Captain of the current HMS Bulwark. The top table included Sir Patrick, Colonel Mick Reece RM & Captain Jimmy James RN. Lt Dave White SCC, the CO of TS Centaur also attended.
On the Sunday 86 personnel departed in two coaches for a journey through the Cheddar Gorge then on to Clarks Village, Street. The British Legion in Street became a welcome watering hole. The return journey included a visit to a cider farm Thus a fabulous weekend enjoyed by all. The weather was perfection, good entertainment, good food & best of all, good company.
The secretary, Denis Askham, who organised the event said, “Our association is bucking the trend & goes from strength to strength. We have a pro-active committee who look to the future”. Future events include a Trafalgar Dinner, RNA & Remembrance Day Marches & a possible sea trip onboard HMS Albion. Next AGM is in Pompey but the secretary is already planning a 2011 venue.

Both our annual events were held at HMS Nelson. Members attended our AGM where the association standard was marched in prior to the proceedings. Vice-Presidents Captain James RN & Colonel Mick Reece RM were also in attendance. Lt Cdr M Pearce represented the serving HMS Albion & spoke of the numerous demands of the modern RN. Interaction amongst the members was very pro-active & the committee are very optimistic about the association’s future. Jim Ure became a committee member. The social evening was well attended. Dancing to“Prelude”.Most of the raffle prizes were evenly divided between four members, (well it seemed that way), & the South Yorkshire lads & lasses, led by the Chuckle Brothers, gave us a rendition of naughty sailor’s songs late into the evening. Food seemed a little scarce until reinforcements came along. Congratulations to Alan & Elsie who are getting married in a few days. Here’s to the next banyan in Weston-super Mare.
